Cultural appropriation in the world and especially in the US is a serious and fluid issue; this is because who are other races to decide whether or not something is offensive? One of the biggest mass over use and appropriation of minorities and other cultures happens at the highest grossing music festival in the world, Palm Springs’s Coachella Valley Music Festival. Since the Music Festival started in 1999, Coachella had started a cultural revolution of sorts. The art and music draws the best artists from both sectors and over 100,000 people who appreciate art and are artists themselves, from todays top performers to street style celebrities to rich kids from all over southern California. But that doesn’t mean they’re all culturally aware and know what is offensive or overtly racist. From Geisha makeup, to Native American Headdresses, to Indian Bindis, to cornrows all of these go back to other cultures’ symbols and backgrounds. For an average Coachella attendee a feathered headpiece might just be for a good picture on social media but to Native Americans, “eagle feathers are presented as symbols of honor and respect and have to be earned,” and they’re traditionally worn by male chiefs in sacred ceremonies. Though unknown to most Coachella goers, this knowledge should be known not just for a music festival but in everyones daily life.
